The 2014 Nonprofit Technology Conference, which took place last week in DC, is a conference that so many nonprofit tech and communications staffers look forward to every year because of the great sessions, useful tips and tools, and awesome people committed to using technology to advance social good.

I was pretty excited when I saw that there was a “Disrupting the Nonprofit Sector” session. I like forward-thinking panels of this type because I look to conferences for two things: practical tools and updates on my sector that I can use straightaway on Monday morning, and importantly, sessions on the future of our sector.

Facebook (FB) just announced one of the most peculiar acquisitions in its 10-year history. It has agreed to buy virtual reality headset maker Oculus VR for $2 billion in cash and stock. “There are not that many companies building technologies that can be the next major computer platform,” said Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg in a conference call with investors. “We are making a long-term bet that immersive virtual reality will be a part of people’s lives.”

Social media “war rooms” are all the rage for brands, but Gary Varynerchuk isn’t buying it.

“I always say, ‘marketers ruin everything’ and as a proud marketer that makes me laugh,” Mr. Vaynerchuk said. What brands are experiencing are diminshing returns. “When everybody is screaming at a loud party, nobody is breaking through.”

That’s why his 315-person agency, VaynerMedia, has advised against focusing on big TV events, because “there are a lot of everyday events that are much more interesting.”
